The | Defence*•Minister * stated to--night tjljat he.had.no doubt that the, GOOD men rhq'uired for the Ninth Reinforcements and the two extra battalions would be 1 ready to go into camp in' the 'middle of October. Apparently there will be 'si ' surplus in some brancheSs to carry forward 'to .the November [drafts. The list of men passed for service np to jrtepfember 1 had shown an infantry' shortage ofw'639 men on the requirements for the Ninth Reinforcements and the extra battalions, but 883 men had been T •.; , . ) ; j ■ awaiting medical examination at that time. The call now was for men for the Tenth Reinforcements, to go into camp early in November. Infantry and mounted .infantry especially were wanted for that force. The Minister mentioned, in connection with recruiting, that he had been thinking of communicating with the National Reserve, the various-'patriotic societies and the mayors of cities and boroughs, with a view to securing their co-oper-ation in an appeal to the men. He did not want to overdo the matter at jthat stage, but men were wanted in large numbers. The request of the Defence Department was that the 1 men would register, and then remain in their employment until they were called upon. ‘ HAWERA REGISTRATIONS. H, Ackroyd, Hawera. H. W. Thomas.
