The body of Corporal Comvns. a young man just returned invalided from the Dardanelles, was found on the railway line hear Okoia early £his morning. ,It is supposed that deceased must have fallen firom the train on Saturday night unnoticed, probably being" killed instantly. Deceased left with the Main Body, and was invalided on account of deafness. He J was well-known and very popular. His terrible end caused groat shock. SUICIDE AT HOKITIKA. Hokitika, September 27. Andrew Axigust, a native of Sweden, aged 60, committed suicide at the hospital while in bed, cutting his throat with a razor. A nurse heard a gurgling sound. A doctor was called, but the attempt to save the man's life was unsuccessful. .DROWNED V7HILE FISHING. SON'S PLUCKY ATTEMPT TO RESCUE FATHER. Auckland, September 27. Frederick Ernest Farley, aged 58, a brother of C. T. Farley, proprietor of a boarding house at Karekare, on the West Coast, was drowned while fishing off the rocks on the beach. He |was taken unawares by ah unusually high wave. He slipped into deep water, striking his head on a rock as he fell. His son, Frederick, aged 24, dived into the water and seized his father, and for two hours struggled to assist him back to the rock. Finally he was forced to loose hold of his father, and with difficulty struggled to safety himself. Frederick was found by a cousin hanging on to a rock quite exhausted and so bruised that he was unable to walk. ,

FIRE ON A LAUNCH. MAN JUMPS OVERBOARD AND 18 j DROWNED. Auckland, September 27. '■ Thomas, Howarth, a waterside worker, aged 39, was drowned" in the harbor on Saturday afternoon, and a companion, Robert Alan McMillan, was severelv burned through a fire on a launch." Edward Browp, owner of the launch, states that while at anchor -off Chelsea he saw the stern of the vessl in flames. He endeavoured to subdue them, but, before he succeeded, he heawl someone say: "Tom Howarth is overboard." He reversed the engpe and steered to where Howarth, was seen struggling in the water. Motherwell," one of the party, jumped; overboard and seized Howarth, and endeavored to get him to the launch, and both sank,! Motherwell alone rose to the surface} and .was pulled aboard the launch mufch exhausted. The launch cruised,about till all hope of recovery of Howarth had to i'-ibe abandoned. Howarth was a married man, and his wife and two clnldren reside in England. The fire on the launch was caused by Howarth having filled a kettle from a tin of benzine, believing it to be water. W r hile he was standing near the fire with the kettle in his hands the benzine flared into his face. He jumped overboard to save himself from burning. „
