Shipowners are perturbed by a circular issued by the Merchant Service Guild to members'' for an 'all-round increase in connection with the coastal and inter-State trade. A, 'special general meeting is to be called for the twentieth to move the following resolution:. —"That owing to the reduction of the purchasing value of a sovereign, the present wages conditions are unbearable and we propose to notify the employers that unless they immediately concede the terms claimed' in January, 1914,' together with the. difference in wages from that date, and also concede the claim for. additional increases varying from 2i to 20 per cent., members will withdraw from the service until the conditions are properly adjusted. A special general meeting o£ the Colonial Sugar Company has been called for September 29th to pass a resolution authorising the directors to distribute in specie amongst members registered on this date a proportion of the respective interests. All preference shares which the Colonial Sugad Co. in Fiji and New Zealand, Limited, held i» payment for assets in New Zealand .have- been sold by the Colonial Company to the Fiji, New Zealand Co., Limited. Newcastle, September 14. Two. have died of smallpox at Newcastle and twenty-seven cases have been isolated. Melbourne, September 14. The High Court quashed the Commonwealth appeal in the Snow cases of May last on the grounds that it could not examine the validity of the previous proceedings except so far as they appeared on record.
