ALLEGED SMUGGLING.

FINE OF £25 IMPOSED.

Auckland, September 7.

William Fredericks, of Gisborne, who was a passenger by the Niagara from Sydney, was charged at the Police Court with having attempted to smuggle a gold and diamond brooch, apparel, etc., of a total value of £ls 19s lOd, on which duty of £l6 was payable. Defendant stated that be wa s unaware that duty had to be paid on any of the articles and had no intention of defrauding the Customs. He was the owner of several farms at Gisborne and was in good circumstances. Mr Cutten, S.M., said he would have to convict defendant, and imposed a fine of £25, adding that the goods would be forfeited.
