United Press Association, Christchurch, August 18. 'Dio racehorse Leoi*fea had a narrow escape from drowning at 'Lyttelton today. He wag being shipped on the Mokoia, when he backed out of the horse box and fell into tie not, which broke, and the horse fell into the water; The bow line of the steamer was slackened to enable-the vessel to swing outside so that the horse could swim clear. Ho swam to the adjoining wharf and got between two coal hulks, which bad to be kept apart by a huge body of willing workers) to p’e vent the horse from being crushed. A launch then came up, and the horse was towed to the patent slip, the only spot where lie could land. He was in the water altogether tor an hour, and the only external injury was a slight cut on the body. He was afterwards safely shipped.
