THE WAIPUKU TOLL-GATE.

- ■ ■ MEMBERS’ OPINIONS. In tho discussion on the granting of the toll-gate, the report on which is telly published elsewhere in this issue, Cr. Baskin said it was hard that tho money collected should be spent on the main road in the South Riding. Cr. Hathaway said the tolls were mainly collected from the drivers of! stock and motor vehicles. j A Councillor; We want a good road.! Cr. Hathaway: We will see that 1 the engineer puts down a good road, 1 not one constructed of sand and shin- 1 gle. j Cr. Smith: 1 suppose the cost of the toll gate will be defrayed by the South' Riding? j Cr. Hathaway: Of course. When building the road we will start at Waipuku and work to Stratford. Cr. Baskin: Why not defer the matter until next meeting. Cr. Anderson; No, get the gate up as soon as possible. I After the letter from Commissioner Short had been read a lengthy discussion to6k place.

Or. Walters said the other ridings —beyond the South—thought they should get a percentage of the tolls collected.

Cr. Smith said a good deal of extra, supervision would be necessary. Cr. Walters said the Council did not want to lose on the toll-gate. The Chairman said they were lucky to get a toll-gate, anad they should not quibble on small matters now. Cr. Coleman said that all the Council had to do was to sign the agreement.

Cr. Walters said he was willing to drop the matter if all the Ridings got a square deal. On Cr. Walters’ motion, seconded by Cr. Coleman, it was decided to sign the document sent by tho Under-Secre-tary of Public Works. Cr. Anderson moved: That as soon as the Order-in-Council he granted the Engineer proceed with the erection of the gate and buildings.— Seconded by Cr. Walter and carried.
