VILNA THREATENED.
REMOVAL OF CITY’S VALUABLES
(Received 10.0 a.m.) i Retrogrnd, August 18
The Gqveijiior of Vilna, as a .precaution" occupation, has ordered the removal of the banks, factory plants, and everything useful to the enemy. Taubes dropped bombs on Vilna.
(Vilna is' 473 miles S.E. of Petrograd on 'the plain railroad from Petro-
grad to War.spwf Evacuation of A’ilua will leave the railroad in the hands of the Germans, and the only communications the Russians will have with Petrograd will be via Moscow or by a shorter route via Torshok and Viazna. The fall of 'Vilna will imperil the Russian forces holding the line from Vilna to Riga, and probably Riga will be evacuated or invested. If the, enemy capture Vilna, they will have a railroad along which they can pour troops Northwards and to the Southeast of Riga to Duunberg, which is about 200 miles south of Petrograd. Indeed. Vilna would lie a loss to the Russians, which would imperil their whole line from north to south.

TURKS PUNISHED IN OPERATIONS ON THE EUPHRATES.
RUSSIANS’ GREAT CAPTURE
United Press Association (Received 1 p.m.) Petrograd, August IS
An official message concerning operations in the Caucasus states:
Our enveloping column captured the Klytch Pass, which is the Turks’ principal line of communication to the right hank of the Euphrates. The Turks violently hut fruitlessly counterattacked. and then threw a division against .Meryhemih Pass, driving out our weak forces with the object ot cutting our communications. We were reinforced hy several battalions, and made a determined attack throughout the day and night of the 9th. A bayonet assault at dawn on the l Oth recaptured the Pass, and, establishing ourselves at Charidagh, we pursued the Turks along the Euphrates Valley. They vainly attempted to make a first stand smith of Kara Kilisse.then on the left hank of the Upper Euphrates. finally at Palanteken. All their efforts were fruitless. On the 12th, we occupied the district of Melasghert, securing our left wing’s position. Wo captured a number of guns, machine guns, and rifles, and a quantity of ammunition, and much commissiarat. Several regimental commanders, dozens of officers and thousands of soldiers were captured. The whole district was full of parties of Askaris. who surrendered unresisting. Shells and caissons litter all the roads traversed by the Turks, indicating that their defeat was serious. (In to-days cable, Melasghert is the most important district named. The scene of operations is SO miles from Erzerum, which is the chief city in Armenia. It is fortified strongly. Melasghert is on the Eastern Euphrates on the River Murad. It is about To miles north-west of Van. which is on the south shore of th lake of 11 io same name. The object of the Russian campaign is obviously t° relieve the Armenians from per sedition, and to extend their Caucasian territory further, around, the Black Sea. 1 The: district, .captuml,ds . „w, fertile, and .the Turks draw much supply from it. Russian pressure in the ’East Caucasus keeps a large body of TnVk.C employed, and tin’s 1 relieves the Allies 'in Gallipoli of further Turkish rtMuforceineuts.) 111 •i■ ■ ; ■,, ; j ,■. • iiii .i i, if • if fill , i i i 'I ' i: r ' ■ GERMAN PROGRESS REPORT. 1 [United Press Association.] ’ (Received 1 p.m.) Amsterdam, August 18.
