(Received 9,. Petrograd. ,\ugvst 18. . The inhabitants are evacuating B.ielostok.
Refugees from Lomza state that three days? bombardment preceded the German occupation. The inhabitants were refused the use of the basements and cellars, and several houses were burned or blown up, scores of civilians being, killed and wounded.
Bielostok is about 70 miles northwest of Brest Litovsk. The evacuation of Bielostok is incidental to the great casual retirement to the Kovno-Grad-no-Xarew-Brest Litovsk-Cholm-Stanis-lau line, which is a long straight barrier vtp further German advance. The evacuation of Bielostok deprives the Russians of a railway terminus, but their lines hold the railway front from Moscow and ’Petrograd. COST OF THE ADVANCE. United Puess Association. I x Rotterdam, August 17. The Cologne Gazette says that a great area westward of the N istula is covered with wagons, which are ceaselessly bringing up supplies. The Russian destruction of railways and bridges necessitates fabulous exertions to carry supplies for the adyancing Germans. ■ <■ ... j - GERMANS CAUGHT BY OWN CAS. Petrograd, August 17. It has transpired that three thousand Germans, preceded by an asphyxiating gas cloud, advanced at dawn on August Bth. hoping to storm onu of the, forts at Ossowiec. The wi|cl suddenly changed, and the German's* became panic-stricken and fled: -£•>, While the fortress’ artillery shot hun-
dreds down, many of the enemy wore attacked by their own artillery, ami before the latter realised the reason of the flight the men l were overtaken by the gas, and between two fires the column was practically annihilated.
