WORK AT TRENTHAM.
Per Press Association
Wellington, August 11
"Within the past few weeks the various agents for the Labor Department have sent almost 100 workmen to TrenthamjiCamp and an additional score to Featherston. The majority of the men have been drawn from Wellington City, but fairly large numbers have come from Christchurch, whilst Timaru, Ashburton, Blenheim. Wanganui, Palmerston North, and Auckland have sent a quota. Wherever carpenters have been available they have been offered work at Trentham; in fact the Department has made a special appeal to competent men to proceed 'at once to take up employment at the camp. General lahor-
ers have also been called on in largo numbers. Among the workers are several men who have enlisted and ore waiting to lie called up for service with the reinforcements in Wellington. Thin call for workers has practically put an end for the time being to unemployment amongst laborers anad carpenters. Pressure in Christchurch has also been relieved considerably. PARCELS FOR THE FRONT. Up till a few days ago all parcels for men at the front in Gallipoli. Egypt, and Malta had to be sent via London as we bad no parcel post arrangements with the companies whose vessels traversed the Suez Canal. This has now been rectified by a new arrangement having been made with -4h© steamship companies concerned who will now take parcels from New Zealanad via Colombo each week, at a slight increase in the rates. The ordinary parcel post rates to Egypt are as follow :
Via London—Parcels not exceeding 31b. Is Bd; 71b, 3s Id; 111 b, Is 6d.
Via Colombo.—Parcels not exceeding 31b, 2s Bd; 71b, 4s 4d : 111 b. t>«.
Arrangements have been made to send parcels to members of the Expeditionary Forces (via London) at the following rates:—3lb, Is; 71b. 2s; 111 b, 3s.
And from July 22 the public hisre been able to send parcels to members of our forces (via Colombo) at the following rates;—3lb. Ls lid; 71b. 'fe 7MI; 111 b, 4s lid. Parcels sent via London leave hy. every direct steamer,' and arrive in Egypt in about 54 days. Those that are dispatched via Colombo ( Weekly) reach Egypt in 34 days. MISCELLANEOUS. On Saturday night the Wellington Savage Club decided to subscribe three machine-guns for the use of the New Zealand forces. As the guns cost about £240 each, the offer iuyolvos a donation of over £7OO.
