BIG ORDER FOR BEEF. THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR SPEAKS United Press Association (Received 8.0 a-m.) New York, August 15. A firm Of Chicago packers has received a cable to furnish an estimate of the cost of one million head of Ai|ieiiican beef cattle, cash on delivery at Liverpool. It. is stated that the order will involve a sum of twenty million sterling, and will reduce the number of cattle in the United States to a minimum.

The World is publishing a series of articles exposing Germany’s endeavours to mould public opinion in America against the Allies, to involve America in the war. and in financing the news service, which, though it is supposed to be impartial, is really proGerman.
DEFENCE REQUIREMENTS

Cabinet has been advised that the minimum requirements for defence are half a million trained citizen soldiers, in addition to a small standing army, provided that the navy and coast forces will be maintained. A proposal will shortly be submitted to Congress. , There is a wave of enthusiasm' for preparedness, and thouof young men are spending their holidays' hi training camps.
The reply to the Austrian Note has been despatched. It argues that to place an embargo on munitions at this time is not in accord with the principles of neutrality.
