Captain Bean, the official Press correspondent, has been reported for bravery. His brother, in a letter, says that tiie Captain was accompanying a charge, when he saw a wounded Australian outside the trench. Despite General McCay's threat to send him hack, the Captain went and brought in the man. General MeCay reported him for bravery. On the same day. Captain Beau, under heavy Hre, built with pacs dropped by soldiers a protecting wall round a wounded Colonel and saved his life.
V.C. JACKA'S EXPLOIT.
Sydney, August 10. Captain Bean elaborates the story of Corporal Jncka'.s winning the Victoria Cross. Just as day was breaking the Turks threw bombs into an Australian trench, killing two and wounding four. They took possession of the trench, killing an' 1 officer who went to ascertain the position. Jacka, lonehanded, held the Turks while assistance was sought. Lieutenant Hamilton rushed up. but was shot dead. Another officer arrived with a platoon, and called out for volunteers for the job. Three Beudigonians volunteered. The first man was shot as soon as he put his head round the corner. Jacka jumped back, and while the rest of the party held the end of the lire trench he scrambled through a communication trench to the other end. The fire trench party, heaii'ng shots, charged through and found Jacka with an unlighted cigarette in his mouth, and a flushed face. He said, "I've managed to get the beggars, sir.'' The trench wa,s blocked with Turks. Jacka having shot five', mid" had just finished bayoneting the remaining two.
