A Sydney cablegram to-day states that the steamer Ilford. from Delagoa Bay to Auckland, with a cargo of fertiliser, put iu to Newcastle to re-btUkk-er, owing to the protracted passage and rough weather.
As the result of iuvestigatioius intothe circumstances of the recent alleged assault ia Broadway, it is stated a© action will follow, the opening of the hearing probably being on Friday next, at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Stratford.

•A meeting convened by the Mayore** (Mrs J. W. Boon), was held in the Fire Station yesterday afternoon to fismr-j Ladies' Patriotic Committed. Mrs Boon presided over an attendance, of twenty ladies. The Mayor, in opening the meeting, said that tt '. was called to form a ladies' patriot'c committee to do any work neces.sary in "The town. Mrs: Boon's motion—- " That the Stratforfl Ladies' Patriotic Committee be formed" was seconded by .Miss Hogg and carried unanimous-,, • ly. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mrs; J. W~~. Boon ; vice-persidents, Mrs J. B. Hiue and Mrs Good ; secretary, Mrs Budge j treasurer. Mr* White; executire committee, Mesdames McDonald, McQuay, Uuiacke, and Crawskaw. An appeal for funds was read from the secretary of the Volun- , fceer Sisterhood, Christchurch, aud it was decided to pas's the matter on to the Patriotic Fund Committee. It was decided to hold a big bazaar in the Town Hall early in December, and to i request Mr Campbell Jackson to draw the Art Union for his section during , the.' evening.
