ANNIVERSARY DAY.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4. His Worship the Mayor (.Mr .1. W . Boon i as received a telegram from the Premier (Hon. W . I*. Massey), in the following terms; “The Government has received a request that New Zealand should cooperate in giving effect to the proposal I that on August I, being the anniver|sary of the outbreak ol the war between England and Germany, all the parts of the British Empire should i join in demonstrating its union and determination. An identical resolution will lie proposed to public meetings held on that day throughout Great Britain and its Dependencies, and the Government invites Your Worship to convene a public meeting to he held in your Borough on August -Ith, and to propose to such meeting a resolution which is in the following terms. “That on this anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war, this meeting of the burgesses of Stratford records its inflexible determination to continue to a victorious end the struggle in maintenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which are/ the common and sacred cause ol the Allies.”

In accordance with the above. His Worship the Mayor invites the public of this district to a meeting to be held on Wednesday evening in the 1 own Hull. It is the intention of the Mayor to ask the members of the Patriotic Committee to act in conjunction with him in the matter, and he will approach the committee at a meeting to be held this evening. Further details will be made public on Monday. The Chairmen of the Stratford and WhangamomonH County Councils are being invited to attend on Wednesday.
