LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the Christe'hnreh Court to-day. Archibald Malloch was charged with making a bet on July 8 on the result of the Seadown Handicap at the Timaro Trots. The Press Association states that a .witness, in his evidence, stated that he'gave accused 10s for a bet at tote odds, and the horse won. but he got no dividend. The defendant, in his evidence, said he only acted as agent, and" meant' to give the money to a bookmaker,, but forgot. The police said.that Malloch was a reputed bookmaker. He was fined £5 and costs.
A Douglas farmer, having had no mail or papers for three days last week wired to Mr J. R; Hine, Wellington : "Dine blocked at Huiroa, no train since Wednesday ; can we have one tomorrow?" The answer came sharp; "Minister will provide train to-morrow if possible."—l. B. Hine. Needless to say, adds the farmer, the train came!
