COMMONWEALTH CABLES.
NEW SOUTH WALES ASSEMBLY ON THE SALE OF LIQUOR.
Per Pkkss Association. (Received 10.20 a.m.) Svdney, July 28
! In the Assembly Mr Carmichael ! moved in favor of a Referendum on the position of curtailing the hours ('or the sale of Uquor. He said that he took the mutter up on the ground only of national economy and the limiting of the extravagance oi the public. After a debate, in which the majority favored action, but without going to the expense of a Referendum, Mr, Holman interposed, and asked Mr Carmichael to explain wliy lie took action without consulting the Government or the caucus when the proposal was not included in the Labour platform.. Mr Carmichael replied that he always thought members of the caucus were bound to vote on matters on the platform or as affecting the fate of the Government. The Premier, who is as bewildering as a double negative, which reverses the whole thing, says : "If it is outside the platform you have no right to bring it forward." From his greater experience and solidarity in these matters lie can draw quaint interpretations of well-known laws. The motion was negatived by 25 to 17.
