GERMANS CROSS THE NAREW.
(Received 1.30 p.m.)
Petrograd, July 26
The Germans erossed the Narew near the confluence with the Orjitza, and floated pontoons down the small tributaries which, the Germans had previously seized. The crossing was facilitated by an islet in, the middle of the river. There are extensive forests on the left bank of the Narew, this region being intersected with streams. The Puissians hope that their success on the north bank of the Dneister under similar conditions may be repeated on the Narew, In any case, the Germans are confronted with sixteen miles of roadless country before they reach the Bug, which is a much more
formidable obstacle than the Narew. The Germans are now twenty-four miles from Warsaw. German aeroplanes dropped bombs on Warsaw in a vain attempt to destroy the Vistula bridge, and there'were several civilian casualties. THE RUSSIAN REPORT. (Received 10.40 a.m.} Petrograd, July 26. The Germans continue to advance in the Baltic provinces, their immediate goal being Ponvenash, and ultimately the Petrograd-Yilna railway. The operations at present are of secondary importance. The Russians wore called back in order to maintain touch with the Mitau-Shavli forces.
