LOYAL AFRICANDERS

BOER CENERALS MAKE STARTLIMC STATEMENT.

WHAT GERMANY HAD IN VIEW. United Phkirs Association. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Capetown, .July 2."). General Smuts, speaking at the (iti/.cms' banquet to General Botha, said when the defence system had developed for a decade in South Africa, that country would possess one- of the finest fighting forces in the world. They had now won South-West Africa, a valuable country which would support a large white population, by having done their duty and complying with Imperial wishes. They must now ask themselves: "Are we going to stick to the country we have so brilliantly conquered?" It seemed a-' clear as noonday that if South-West Africa did not belong to the Union a future day would come when the Union would helong to German West Africa. If they wanted a peaceful development of South Africa let them stick to what they had and make others understand, the world over, that they were determined to hold what they had. It was now the Union's plain duty to assist in the European struggle. The Government hoped that thouands of volunteers would he forthcoming. The importance and value of sea-power were plainly manifested in the .SouthWest African campaign, as prior to the Falkland Island battle the German Pacific squadron was such a serious menace that it hung up the campaign for six weeks. General Botha declared that the most interesting discovery made in German South West Africa was a, German map drawn on a basis of a supposed peace signed at Pome in 19KS. which showed the whole of South Africa, south of the* Equator, as a Greater German Empire, with' the smallest portion marked "Boer resercation." Had also received information that the German Governor corresponded with the Kaiser, whose answer was: "I shall only recognise South Africa's independence, but ever guarantee it, provided a rebellion is started immediately." Germans of Damaralaiid had hung and shot several natives in cold Mood. The Germans' attitude towards the natives was a grave menace to the Union, and this was one reason they could not ever give up the country . He referred enthusiastically to a contingent which was being raised and which showed South Africa was prepared to continue -to do her duty in the battlefields of Europe and show the world that she stood for Freedom and Justice.
