FRENCH COMMUNIQUE.
DENIAL OF GERMAN SUCCESS. If p United Press Association, (Received 8.50 a.m.) Paris, July 16. A communique states: The alleged German success in the Argonne cabled on the fourteenth was really a failure to break our frqnt. The Germans, using a great quantity of asphyxiating gas, overwhelmed our line at certain points, but we forced them back and recaptured hill 285. It is untrue that our field guns were captured or put out of action. The German losses were considerable. I# THE FIGHTING IN LORRAINE. MANY ENEMY ATTTACKS ALONG WHOLE LINE. (Received 9.80 a.m.)' Paris, July 16. A communique states: “The Germans in Lorraine attacked on a fropt of three kilometres the positions they lost at Leintery. and simultaneously bombarded the whole front line from the forest at Chempenoux to Vezouse, besides making isolated infantry attacks, but everywhere they were repulsed . A body of attackers advanced to our barbed wire south-east of the forest at Parroy, but Were dispersed with heavy loss. > HILL 60. London, July 15. Replying to Mr McNeill, Mr Tennant said that the Government was not aware of the position at Hill 60 until Sir John French’s despatch was received. Sir John French stated that his reasons for not reporting the I act earlier wore that it seemed to be that since May stb neither side had held the Hill ; therefore the public wore not misled. The Hill had practically disappeared.'
BERLIN DENIAL OF FRENCH SUCCESS.
Berlin, July 1 5
A communique states that the French reported attempts to retake positions captured in tHe Argonne collapsed, despite tlie use of great quantities of ammunition and strong bodies of fresh troops, .'with unusually high losses. The only result of the French efforts was- that the prisoners increased to OS officers and .‘JOSB men.
FRENCH UTILISING KNIVES, S' London. July 16. The Daily -Mail’s Flanders correspondent says that the French soldiers are arming with short knives, finding the fixed bayonets too long for rough work when finishing off the Germans after bombing them. It is expected that the British bomb-throwers will soon he similarly armed. ALLIED AIRMEN ACTIVE. Amsterdam, July 10. The Allied airmen continue to actively bomb the German trenches. English airmen destroyed an ammunition depot between Holders and Yortryk. Four aeroplanes bombed n casino for officers at Meener. Several officers were .killed ami wounded. Airmen bombed Z.eebrngge breakwater on Wednesday morning. \
KITCHENER’S NEW ARMY.
London, July 15,
The Daily Mail’s correspondent at the British headquarters pays a tribute to the splendid qualities of Lord Kitchener’s new army in France. He says there is- a rude shock waiting for Prince Rupprecht, who is so anxious about its whereabouts. The new army’s sole desire is to get at the Bodies with the bayonet. Since their arrival at the front the new levies have been initiated into trench warfare. The general commanding the division is enthusiastic about them and says; “I do not believe they have a nerve in their bodies. They are magnificent men, both in spirit and physique. Once they start to attack there is no holding them back. I have never seen the territorial system to better advantage.”
ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED.
The High Commissioner reports London, July 16 (5.-20 p.m.)
North of Arras the enemy set out from hi.s trenches south of,Chateau de Carleul during the night and was im-mediately-stopped. by the Allies’ infantry and artillery fire. In Lorraine, the Germans attacked on a front of three kilometres, at positions they had lost near De Luntrey. At the same time they bombarded the Allies’ line from the forest of Champenoux to Pezoux, and made several infantry attacks. They were everywhere rerepulsed with considerable losses.
