TRENTHAM COMMISSION.
OPENING PROCEEDINGS. Pi-ai J’iihss Association*. Wellington, July 13. The preliminary sitting of the Royal Commission to inquire into. Trentham allairs was held to-day. The President said it was proposed to issue a general advertisement in the press in-j viting all who were able to give information to hand in their names, and it was hoped some arrangement would be! made by which the evidence of such persons could be presented in the most favorable circumstances by having a counsel employed on their behalf. Dr. Salmond. at the request of the commission, explained that the Government had considered the propriety ol having counsel should the commission desire it. The Government was prepared to appoint two independent counsels, one to represent persons against whom charges were being made and the other to represent persons making charges. The President said this would be the most desirable course to adopt. He added that a list of tht* names of the officers connected with the admiuistrattion of the camp was necessary. The commission adjonued till Friday. -.(Lieutenant-Colonel Potter. Camp Commandant, will probably be the first witness.
