An accident occurred to the northbound Welliugtou-Waiiarapa express this afternoon. Between Rahiatua. and Konini the engine ran into a slip, left the rails, and toppled over towards the river. The carriage behind the tender ran up against the bank, and but for this probably the whole train would have been pulled oft' the line into the river.
Fireman Fletcher was extricated from under the coal box, which was right across the rail. He had a miraculous escape, but suffered no .serious injury. The engine-driver, named Flaws, and Hie passengers escaped unhurt. Several women ami children Were in the derailed carriage.
The line is considerably damaged, and the service i.s disorganised. The slip is not large, but a huge boulder weighing about half a ton, was the principal obstruction. At the scene of the accident there is a curve, and also a cutting, the line running along the river bank.
