THE DARDANELLES

LANDING, OF V.HE N.Z. GUNS

United Press Association. (Received 10.15 a.m.) Sydney, July 12,

Captain Bean (Commonwealth correspondent), writing on May 20, describing the few days after the landing, said: At length the New Zealand guns were landed, having waited for, ages. Then came a punt with the horses for the guns, and they took o.the guns along the beach. He,re, the artillerymen unhitched and dragged the guns across the hillsides into positions, where, afterwards, they did tremendoui work, sometimes at a range of fifty yards. Writing on June 3, Captain Bean tells of the advance from Pope’s Hill. Everything went well, except that the Otago Battalion did not come up owing to the congestion of communications. When it did come up, the effects of the bombardment had worn off, but they had to face a withering fire. They, advanced to a line a little short of the one laid down for it, but they were forced to dig in. The force was to have been reinforced by the Canterbury Battalion during the night, but this was impossible, and therefore it was unable to further advance. FIFTIETH.
