P. .Morgan, junior, at his home at Long Island. The assailant arrived at Mr Morgan’s home in a motor car and asked the butler, at the pistol’s point, to show him Mr Morgan. The butler called for help. Mr Morgan entered the hall, and Holt fired, ■wounding Mr Morgan twice in the hip and on the side. The butler seized a coal scuttle and felled. Holt and captured him. Mr Morgan’s telephonic reassurances to New York friends prevented them advertising the matter on the Stock Exchange. Holt confessed to German nationality. and said he was anxious to kill Mr Morgan because Mr Morgan’s firm was exporting war munitions to enable his (Holt’s) enemies to kill Germans. A satchel full of dynamite was found near Mr Morgan’s home at Glen Gove. Sir Cecil Spring Rice (British Ambassador) was visiting Mr J. P. Morgan, and witnessed the shooting.
