THE NEED OF MUNITIONS. MR LLOYD CEORCE AT WORK. ENEMY'S PURCHASING POWER. [United Press Association.] (Received 8.45 a.m.) London, June 20. Mr Lloyd George appointed Mr 1). A. Thomas, coal owner, to go to America and Canada, to organise munitions contracts. The New York Herald states that German agents are buying twelve per cent, of the ammunition at Hertford, fifteen per cent, at Bridgeport, and ten per cent, at Waterbury. It is presumed it is somehow reaching its destination, as the agents continue to order. The first shipment was sent to South America, and thence to Holland and Denmark. ESTABLISHING FACTORIES. (Received 9.15 a.m.) London, June 20. It has been decided to establish a national shell factory at Birmingham. THE CASUALTY LIST. London, June 19. Casualty lists published to-day show eighty-one officers and 2576 men in both services. In the fifth battalion of South Lancashires forty-six were killed; 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, 21 killed and 2fi7 missing; 2nd South Staffordshires, 189 wounded; 2nd Royal Lancaster®, 405 missing and 119 missing reported to be prisoners. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. London, June 10. Mr Lloyd George's power, officially defined, is to organise the sources of supply and the labor available to supply munitions, of which the supply is wholly or partly undertaken by the transfer to him a s may be agreed with the department or authority concerned in the functions in the matter of general ordnance, or those connected with Woolwich, other Government arsenals, or small arms factories.
The production of Scotch malt whisky has decreased by a million gallons for the season.
