'the fighting-at-arras. SIR JOHN FRENCH'S TRIBUTE. Times and Stdney Stjn Service. London, June 14. The Times' military correspondent, reviewing the brilliant campaign at ; Arras, says the striking facts are the skill with which the operations were 'directed and gr#at gallantry of the French. The Germans boasted of daily success, hut, in point of fact, they were , beaten everywhere at every point, ,and lost tens of thousands. The Germans were unable to the French science and impetuosity. The < greatest credit is due to"the artillery and the heroic perseverance of, the infantry, which was chiefly responsible for the jj successes. The Germans were unable to find sufficient troops to check the French, and theinferenee is that their . reserves in the west were exhausted, and they know that if they Withdraw troops from other sectors the line is I liable to reprisals. General French personally tliariked the 2nd Cavalry .Division for their re- ; cent work in the firing line. "The man- '. ner in which you stood up against heavy artillery with little'or no trench ■ protection is nothing short of marvelu lons," he said. CANADIAN BAYONET WORK
