LOCAL AND GENERAL.

It is understood that the gutted portion of Mercer's buildings is to lie removed and three shops built on the site. Mr Mercer will have premises .similar to the old one, but the Billiard Saloon will not be re-built, the frontage occupied by it being used for two small shops. The following is the report of the manager (Mr A. M. Spilman) of the Stratford Abattoirs for the month of May, for submission to the Borough Council this evening: The following stock were slaughtered—Cows 55, heifers 34, oxen 1, calves 1, sheep 229, lambs 32, pigs 69, tripes prepared 39. Slaughtering fees £52 5s 9d. Stock condemned: Cows, 4 partially; heifers, 1 wholly, 1 partially; pigs, 1 wholly; sheep, 2 wholly, 1 partially. An unusual charge was preferred against a carrier at the Riverton Court on Tuesday (says the Southland Times), when Mr C. E. Johnstone was proceeded against by the Ra.T.v'ay Department on two informations for charging him with having consigned goods for carriage on the RivertonOtailtau railway on behalf of two persons of firms, and having omitted to make out a separate consignment note in respect of the goods of each of such persons of firms, contrary to the railway by-laws. .Mr H. Macalister, who appeared for the department, stated that the by-law had been made to check the irregularities that had been taking place in connection with the practice followed by some persons of consigning goods on behalf of other persons with their own, in order to evade the proper charges. The present cases involved very small loss to the department, but it was desirable that the attention of the public should be drawn to this by-law and that the practice should be checked. Mr Johnstone was in business as a carrier and forwarding agent, and he should have known the by-law. Mr Johnstone stated that lie was ignorant of the bylaw. After hearing the evidence of Inspector Robb, the magistrate convicted the defendant on both informations and ordered him to pay costs amounting to 18s.
