Mr F. E. Smith, Solicitor-General, has been knighted. The death of Mrs S. A. Breach, of Hawera, is reported. Tiie death is announced of Mr Alexander Hide, father of Mr E. Hide, editor of the Christchurch Sun. Surgeon-Major G. Home (New Plymouth), has arrived at Alexandria from the Dardanelles, where lie went with the New Zealanders, Mr Mackenzie, travelling secretary of the New Zealand Presbyterian Bible class movement, is visiting Taranaki and will preach in the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church morning and evening. Mr 11. H. Quilliam, New Plymouth, has volunteered for active service. He has for some time been qualifying for a commission, but none being immediately available he has registered as an ordinary private. 51 r Quilliam, who is the son of Mr J. H. Quilliam, is one of Taranaki’s rising solicitors, and his example in patriotism should not be lost on many able-bodied young men without ties or responsibilities. His brother is a member of the reinforcements about to sail.
