Tho Governor has received the fullowing cable message from Earl Kitchener in reply to the congratulations which his Excellency forwarded on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand in connection with the birthday honors:—“l hasten to assure you of my deep appreciation of your very kind message, for which 1 am most grateful.—(Sgd.) Kitchener.” The l-*rime Minister stated it has been finally arranged that the New Zealand High Commissioner, Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, will have his term of appointment extended. —P.A. The friends of Colonel Chaytor will be pleased to hear that Mrs Chaytor has received a cable stating that lie is progressing favourably. Mr G. T. Ellery, late town clerk at Adelaide, has been appointed town clerk at Melbourne at a salary commencing at £llOO a year. The officers on H.M.S. New Zealand have not forgotten Sir H. 1). Bell, who was in charge of their tour round New Zealand (states the Press Association), and have sent him hearty congratulations on the honor conferred on him. Of the seven remaining life members of the Legislative Council five are octogenarians, namely, Sir Charles Bowen, Captain Bailey, Sir Henry Miller, Sir George McLean, and the Hon. J. 1). Ormond, the last mentioned being the youngest. A private cable was received in Wellington to-day stating that lan Campbell, lieutenant in the Cameron Highlanders, was killed in action on May 9th. Lieutenant Campbell’s father is Mr P. Campbell, late of Ham, Christchurch, and his mother is the daughter of tho late Hon. W. "Robinson and sister of Lady Campbell, of Cheviot, and Lady Bell, of Wellington.
