The King lias conferred the Order ol' Merit on Lord Flaldane.
Senor Chagas has resigned the Premiership of Portugal, lie lias lost the sight of an eye, and also has an arm injured. The King of Greece shows unfavorable symptoms, and another operation is probable. Though he. is weak, there is no immediate danger. Colonel Irving, commandant of South Australia, has been appointed as successor to Colonel Legge, chief of the Commonwealth General Staff.
The Taianaki Land Board yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr A. Coxhead in his recent bereavement.
The Tarauaki Education Board yesterday passed a vote of condolence to Mr A. H. kalcombe, in the loss of his wife.
Sergeant Haseron, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, was a member of the Mawson Expedition, in the rapacity of assistant scientist, states a Sydney cablegram.
At the Hawera Masonic Temple on Tuesday evening, Brother T. E. Bickford, who will leave for the front on Friday, Mas presented with a wristlet watch as a small souvenir from the members of the Hawera Lodge.
Private Reginald McKoy, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, is now in the Western Hospital at Manchester, :md is progressing favorably, is a son ol' Mr Hugh" MeKoy, of Normanby.
Mr Andrew Dunlop, general manager of the Haw era Dairy Factory Company, has gained world's championship honors in his profession by being awarded the red ticket for his entry of cheese at the Royal Dairy Show, England.
Mr A. A. Gideon, who for the past six years lias been in charge of the gaol at Napier, has been promoted to the charge of the [nvercargill Gaol. Mr Gideon has been in the service of the Justice Department for thirtytwo years, out of which twenty-six were spent in Auckland.
Mr and Mrs G. W. Walters, of Mangatoki, who are leaving shortly for a holiday trip to Australia, were entertained at a social on Tuesday night. During the evening, Mr 1). L. A. Astbury, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented Mr Walters with a gold sovereign case, suitably inscribed, and Mrs "Walters with a -silver epergne, also inscribed.
At the meeting of the Taranaki Education Board yesterday, the following resignations were accepted:—Mr Birkett, sole teacher at Mangahume; Mr .1. Cresswell, pupil teacher at Stratford, and Mrs. Bower, sewing teacher at Okau. The chairman also reported that he had made the following temporary appointments:—(ftpwan, Miss M. Wilson, sole teacher; Vruti, Miss B. Hunt, sole teacher; Oakura, Miss L. Williams, sole teacher.

She then called fo: cheeis for Mr Turkihgton, which neve hoavtily given. The recipient thanked all of them for their kind present. Ho \.as not only saying good-bye to them but to the teaching profession for ever. He could only say they were, on the whole, the best lot of children he had ever taught. Mr Turking-.on left for Wellington on Tuesday en route for England and Ireland.
