France'proudly noted that the infantry were overjoyed at leaving the trenches, where they had been stuck for the winter. The feeling is increasing that it is permissible to shortly expect something more than sapping and mining. Red Cross trains are arriving in Paris full of men in the highest spirits, and proudly waving branches of lilac, which were taken from the gardens of Carency, while their letters are absolutely confident that the advance will be continued.
GERMANS RETIRE WESTWARD OF YPRES CANAL. OdiTiD Pbkbb Association Paris, May 18. Official: The enemy is threatened with complete envelopment by our recent successful attack, and they have evacuated all positions westward of the Yser canal. The British were subjected to very strong counter-attacks northward of La Bassee from Sunday night till Monday, and continued the battle, victoriously in the daytime on Monday, inflicting very heavy losses. A detachment of 700 Germans was caught between the French machine-guns and German artillery, and was exterminated to the last man under the British cross-fire. The British took a thousand prisoners and captured machine-guns. We captured several works at Bois tU A illy and took three machine-guns and 250 prisoners, including several officers. ALLIES AT WEST YSER. WIPING OUT THE SCORE. (Received 11.55 a.m.) Paris, May 18. A communique states that the Germans left two thousand dead on the ground near the West Yser Canal, which was evacuated on Sunday.
