CAPTURE OF TARNOW. GERMAN TRICKS AGAIN. REPRISAL RELUCTANTLY URGED United Phkm Aspooiation (Received 9.25 a.m.) London, May 18. The Daily Mail’s Lemberg correspondent says the German capture of Tarnow was largely due to the use ol poisonous gas. The opinion is expressed that the Allies must resort to a similar method of war. The Russians reluctantly burnt eighth’ thousand tons of petroleum at Baraulav to prevent it falling into the enemy’s hands. (Received 9.25 a.m.) Petrograd, May 18. An official message explains that though the Rusian Third Army was unable to check the Germanic pressure in the Gorlice sector, it prevented the enemy breaking the Russian line and the enemy’s action was reduced to frontal attacks on the Third Army’s positions, which was successively occupied. ENEMY’S HEAVY LOSSES. CASUALTIES IN GALICIA. (Received 9.25 a.m.) Budapest, May 18. Two hundred thousand German and Austrian casualties occurred in Galicia since the beginning of the offensive, chiefly due to numerous bayonet .attacks and hand encounters and the storming of positions, GREAT AUSTRIAN ROUT. RUSSIA RECOVERS FULLY. AN ARMY FLEEING. (Received 8.55 a.m.) Petrograd, May 18. A communique says:—The magnitude of the Austrian rout in Bukovina quite nullifies the success of the enemy in West Galicia. The whole region from the Dniester to the Pnith is now in our power. The Austrians are fleeing in disorder after a terrible defeat. They have evacuated a powerful position covering a hundred miles, for which they sacrificed an enormous number of lives. The remnants of the army is fleeing towards Prutb, and is doomed to disaster by the brilliant action of our cavalry. The Austrians are making a last stand at Kolomea which is a vital railway centre. Czernowitz is already in our possession.
A PLAN UPSET U WHAT GERMANY INTENDED., THE ALLIES PROVE TOO GOOD, (Received 11.55 a.in.) A communique states that in spite nf the concentration of largo forces in the Siiavli region, the Germans, after severe repulses, are now on the defensive. The German plan to transport forces from France and Belgium to Galicia via Courland had assumed great proportions in April, hut apparently the Frenchmen’s activity prevented the completion of the scheme. Saxons, Mavarians, and Prussian guards met very severe loss in attacking our fortified positions.
GERMAN ATROCITIES. RUSSIA MAKES FORMAL PROTEST. (Received 9.55 a.in.) IVtrograd. May 18. Russia has decided to protest on the basis of Prince Kurakin’s recent report on German atrocities and also at German aviators bombing Reel Cross hospitals.
