King Albert, in acknowledging £4600 subscribed on Rose Day, said bo was profoundly toadied by the wave of generosity and good heart shown by the people of Mel bourne in thus bringing brotherly aid to his people.
The Hon. Thomas Mackenzie and Miss Mackenzie on Sunday visited the New Zealanders at Birmingham. Many arrived while the High Commissioner was in the hospital. It was a pathetic sight to see the bandaged men in war-worn uniforms, but all were cheerful. As the ambulances drove up, people of Birmingham cheered. Many {lowers were sent to the hospital, and Spine of the soldiers on the stretchers had flowers handed to them. All the cases are progressing favorably. A number who were reported to be severely wounded were greatly improved by the vCryage and are now out of danger. The New Zealand War Contingent Association is arranging extra comforts and also for the care of. convalescents. . ■Miss Mackenzie visited Chichester toklav. Mr Macuafliara, in the House of Commons, said that up to loth May, tons of British shipping had been sunk or-captured. Exclusive of warships, 1556 Jives had been lost, We sank or captured 314,456 tons of German- shipping, no lives being lost. The Germans destroyed by mines, submarines-,- or cruisers, 74 neutral vessels.
TThe Board of Trade states that 982,740 workers from January to the end of April secured rises aggregating £l3-3,537' weekly. The Premier (Mr Asquith), in reply to-a question, said the Government was considering the question of prohibiting race meetings during the war. He doubted whether legislation would he necessary. . , _
