I At the .Magistrate’s Court to-day, ’whoa Barclay Hector, late Registrar •of the University of New Zealand, ap* ’pcaml on a charge of embezzling 18s lOd belonging to the Senlate, Mr Macassey, for the prosecution, asked that the charge be withdrawn land three others substituted. This 'was allowed, and accused,was charged : (1) That In* did fradulently convert 'the sum of £37 12s 2d on April 13th, 105, to his own use ; v-) that having received from the Senate of the Uni- , versity of New Zealand the sum of 1£650, on terms requiring him to account for same to J. W. Joynt, he did j fraudulently omit to pay the same, thereby committing theft; (3) that on March 13th, U)U, having received the sum of £l5O, on terms requiring him to pay the same to J. W. Joynt in London, he did fradulently omit to do so. The accused pleaded guilty ja ud was committed to the Supreme I Court for sentence, hail being allowed in £250. BAY OF ISLANDS BY-ELECTION. Auckland, May 13. A conference of Liberal supporters in the Bay of Islands electorate, presided over by Sir Josepeh Ward, will he held on Satin-day, when a candidate will be selected. Sir Joseph Ward will deliver an address in the evening. In the course of a telegram to Mr. Stewart, the Reform candidate, Mr Massey says: “I authorise you to make the announcement that you are the * official Government candidate.”
