Massacres in Persia
BUTCHERED LIKE ANIMALS SHOCKING ATROCITIES ON CHRISTIANS. Unitkd Pef.ss Association. (Received 10.25 a.m.) The American missionary at Urumiah, in a letter dated Sth April, says: AH the Christian villages have, been plundered and burned by the Turks and Kurds, and 1000 people massacred. Two thousand died of disease. Two hundred Turks are carrying on massacres. The Russian Vice-Consul at Salmas reported that there had been outrages, and abductions at Salmas and Gulpastan. On the Turkish Consul’s orders. twenty-five prominent citizens were conveyed to a graveyard at Gnlpashan and butchered like animals in the presence of their relatives. One minister was crnciiied and burnt alive, and a Bishop was hanged. Refugees in the Catholic Mission were taken before the Turkish Consul and sixty-four were beheaded. Several parties of Christians at Salmas were massacred, their arms being tied together,. In oilier instances the victims were tied to ladders, their heads sticking through the rungs, and they were' beheaded.
