miD ON ESSEX. ZEPPELIN DROPS BOMBS. MANY BUILDINGS WRECKED. TWO FATALITIES RECORDED. (Received 5.45 a. in A London. May 10. A raider flew over the Marine Parade at Southhend-on-Sea, Essex, ami dropped a bomb, but it missed the gasworks and wrecked a bouse in York Road, injuring a soldier who was asleep. Several explosions shattered the windows within half a mile, j One bomb missed St. Erkenwald s Church which is situate on a conspicuous hilltop. ' Another bomb fired the buildings in a builder’s yard near St. Erkeuj w ald’s. j A bomb wrecked a house in Prittlewell, and a women named Mrs. Wbitewell was killed. In leaping from a window, the husband was severely Injured. A dozen outbreaks of fire occurred at AVestcliff-on-Sea, Essex. An attempt to bomb the gasworks at Leigh-on-Sea.' Essex, failed. Bombs were dropped all round tho Queen Mary Hospital, and also at Canvey Island. Essex. The Zeppelin dropped upwards of eighty bombs, and fled seaward when sighted by an aeroplane at Sheer-ne-ss. AN EARLY-MORNING FLIGHT. (Received 9.15 a.m.) London, May 10. I 5 An airship dropped several bombs at Southend and West cl;.'f at three o’clock in the morning. It is feared it caused damage. PARTICULARS OF THE DAMAGE. MANY FIRES STARTED. THE ZEPPELIN REPORTED HIT. (Received 10.30 a.m.) London, May 10. When the airship, which was using searchlights, was sighted, tho town’s hooter sounded a warning to the people to remain in the houses, hut 100 at Southend, AVestcliff, and Leigh rushed into the streets', hut there w;, no panic. AAlien the bombs were dropped, fires occurred in several different places and spread rapidly. One family escaped from a burning house hy jumping from the windows. A boardinghouse was gutted, hut the occupants escaped. A bomb crashed into the Whitewell’s house, the bed being ignited and the wife killed in bed. The husband was severely injured in trying to extinguish the fire. Ten people were injured at Southend. The spectators state that the Zeppelin wms fired at when passing Pitsea, and they believed it was hit as it appeared to he in difficulties when passing Romford. An aeroplane went up from Sheerness and drove off the airship. It is feared considerable damage was done at Canvev Island.
