A TRAGEDY OF THE WAR. NO PARALLEL FOR JAPAN'S DEMANDS. (Received 8.40 a.m.) London, May 7. The Daily News, in a leading article, says: "It is not easy to find a parallel for such demands by one Power to another as Japan has made upon China. In many respects Japan's demands were more striking than Austria's were on Servia, and which led to the European war. China has done nothing to merit such a penalty, and has offered no menace, but wanted only to enjoy its own liberties in its own way. If China were a military nation, it would never have been thus challenged. She has neither the will nor the 'power to take an irreconcilable course against her powerful neighbour. It would be grotesque to suggest that she was responsible for the crisis, and it will bo the most bitter tragedy of this war if one of its consequences is that an unoffending nation, whose independence and integrity the Anglo-Japanese Alliance guaranteed, is to despoiled by one of the signatories to the Alliance."
