DISTURBANCE IN TRAM. At the Glebe (Sydney) Police Court last, week George Hunt was proceeded against by the Tramway Department on an information by Thomas Kelly, a tram conductor, for using insulting words on St. Patrick's Day. Hunt proceeded against Kelly by cross-sum-mons for assault. It was stated in evidence that Hunt was a passenger on a tram travelling from Leichhardt to the city, when he said to the conductor, who had a piece of green ribbon in his coat. on ought to lie ashamed for having that dirty green in your coat. How dare you conic into my presence with that thing.'' Then Hunt grabbed the conductor and said. "That dirty green; you oUght to be ashamed of it." The conductor stopped the car and asked Hunt to get off. Hunt refused, and tlie conductor caught him by the throat, "All right," said Hunt. I'll get off and give.voii all that you want." As he was stepping off the tram Hunt made a tewing at the conductor. "Then,"- said the conductor. "I made a swing myself in sell-defence." "What was the result:-" asked Mr Goodyer (who appeared for' tlie Tram-way-Department). "Mr Hunt went about his business," was the reply. Other evidence was given that Kelly struck Hunt while the car was stationary, and then the tram started off. Hunt admitted saying to the conductor that he had a cheek wearing the green ribbon on his (Uniform. He would have said the same if the ribbon had been, yellow. When he got off the tram the conductor struck him-one behind the ear au<| again on the chin. Hunt reported the matter to the Tramway Department. After other evidence had been given the magistrate fined Hunt £3 and £2 Ss (id costs, in default 1-1 days' gaol, and Kelly was fined £1 and costs £1 ISs. The alternative was If days' gaol.
