LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Norwegian barque Phyllis, which left Pernambuco in June for Bunbury, West Australia, to load a cargo of jurrah timber for Auckland, is supposed to have foundered with all hands. No news has been received of the vessel since she sailed. The Phyllis was an iron barque of 932 tons gross register. She was built at Bristol 27 years ago, and was well-known in the Australian trade. During a recent cruise on the coast near Gisborne the trawler Gosford landed a peculiar fish (Says the Poverty Bay Herald). There is some speculation as to its name, but it is believed to be a sunfish. Itfj shape is like a large sphere, being long and 2ft across, whilst it is only about I in. thick. There is* one large fin ISin. long on the back, and a similar sized fin underneath. The fish has a very dry skin, and a peculiar feature is the smallness of its mouth. The following new books have been added to the Stratford Public Library: “The Keeper of the Door” (Ethel .M. Dell), “The Man of Iron” (Richard Delian), “The Man and the Moment” /K. Glynn), “The Day of Judgment” LJoseph Hocking), “The Jester” (Leslie Moore), “The Turbulent Duchess” (Percy FJrehner), “Night Wings” (Morico Gerard), “The Man Who Was Afraid” Westrnp), “The Conquering Jew” (John Eraser), “On the Lighting Line” (C. Semdley), “Within the Tides” (Josph Conrad), “The Mystery of Enid Belgairs” (David Whitelaw), “Sons of Satan” (W. Le Qnoux), “The Bine Buckle” (William Osborne), “Movie Church ' * I Town” (John Trevena.), “The Creeping Tides” (Kate Jordan), “A Lovers Tale” (Maurice Hewlett), “The Ward of Toonmseli” (C. Marriott), “A Freelance in Kashmir” (Lieut-Colonel MacMunn), “Big Tremaine,” (Marie Vorst).
