MIDHIRST CEMETERY RESERVE.

Mr W. E. Jones, representing Mr W. G. Malone, the Council’s solicitor.

waited on the Stratford County Council yesterday (by request) and explained fully the position with regard to the now burial reserve which is to be used in connection with the Midhirst Public Cemetery. In the course of Ids remarks, Air Jones stated that at present the title to the new portion of the cemetery was standing in the name of the Manganui Road Board. The laud-X had been set aside in 1898 for cemetery purposes. By a special order made by the Council on 28th September, 1908. the Manganui Road Board was dissolved and the district merged in the County. The proposal now was to make application to the proper quarter to have the Council registered as the fee simple owner (for cemetery purposes). The Council would then be in a position to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for delegation (by Order in Council gazetted) to the Council of the powers of airpointing or removing trustees conferred on the Governor by Section 5 of “The Cemeteries Act, 1908.” Steps should also be taken to ascertain whether the present trustees of the Midhirst Cemetery (proper), who were appointed by the Governor vide N.Z. Gazette. 23rd December, 1908, would be willing to act in the management...-a of the new portion of cemetery as well as of the old portion. If the present trustees were willing to act, then Urn Council could make the necessary appointments by Deed. A Mr Jones answered several questions on the matter, and finally, after discussion, the following resolution was passed: “That the Minister of Internal Affairs he communicated with, so that steps may he taken to have the Council, by Order in Council, gazetted delegate to appoint or remove trustees in connection with the new portion of the Midhirst Cemetery Reserve, and that the existing trustees be approached with a view to ascertaining whether they would be willing to act in administering such new portion.” Seconded by Cr. Coleman and carried. wmmmmrnm mu
