Mr J. Vigor Brown was returned unopposed for the Mayoralty of Napier, reports the Press Association.
' The Hon. Thomas IMayford, ex-Fed-eral .Minister of Defence, is dead, reports an Adelaide cablegram. j His Excellency the Governor and the Vice-Regal party left Auckland for I Rotorua yesterday. They expect to spend about ten days there. Mr R. Gr. Sellar, of the legal firm of I Halliwell, Sellar and Thomson, is ' voluntarily retiring from the partnership. Mr Sellar, who is leaving Flawera about the end of May, purposes taking an extended holiday for health reasons. Captain F. 0, Kimbell (manager of the Hawera branch of the Bank of Australasia) will probably be joining the Expeditionary Force at an early date. Mr H. P. Opie, late engineer to the Egmont'County Council, left Opunakc on Sunday, to join the troops leaving .Hawera for Tientham.
Baron Herbert Router committed suicide with a revolver in grief at his wife's sudden death (states a London cablegram) while her body was awaiting interment.
T. Lnwson announces his intention to stand for a seat at the forthcoming Borough election. Mr Lawson Ts an ex-Councillor of some years' standing. Among the candidates announced for the forthcoming election for Borough Councillors is Mr E. W. Hancock, who it will be remembered stood at a byelection, being defeated by a small majority by Cr. Reader. A meeting of the A. and P. Association was held on Friday night, when there were present: Messrs E. Jackson (President), K. Dingle, E. Kelleher, J. M. Shotter, $\ E. Dobson, W. M. Bayly, W. P. Kirkwood, I). J. Malone, W. H. H. Young. The balance-sheet of the recent Gymkhana was presented, and the President congratulated the Association on the handsome profit and successful gathering. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to all those who helped in any way to make the Gymkhana the success it was.—lt was decided, if sufficient members of tbe Association desire, to organise another trip to the Moumahaki State Farm, members being requested to leave their names with the secretary at once. —It was also decided to call a meeting of ' the general committee shortly, when various matters effecting the Association will be discussed.
