CARDIFF NEWS.
I Your correspondent is not dead. Neither is Can lid’ (load. Tlioro have Jk'oii many tilings doing lately. Kit- , chon teas and smoko concerts and
shooting matches. Your scribe is now suffering a recovery and will try and sort things out. On Tuesday, the 23rd ultimo., the ladies of Cardiff to the tune of of) assembled at the residence of Mr G. A., Merchant, each laden with a kitchen utensil. The gathering was in honor of Miss Belton, who, by the way, is now Mrs 0. Brnnton, and away south somewhere preparatory and settling in Cardiff. Two days later, 2oth March, another kitchen tea was given Miss n i Bose Hancock, who is shortly to oe married. Needless to remark, both’ functions were most successful, and some pretty speeches were made.
Lately there has been carted along the Opnuake Bond a quantity of house timber. Presumably, there’s an epidemic. Is there anv truth, Mr Editor, in the rumour afloat, hero at least, that all bachelors are to be taxed ?
The membership of the Cardiff Miniature Billc Club is now 29, and during the past two months some very interesting matches have been, fired. Mr A. Moon, of Stratford, donated the first trophy, which, after four shoots, was won by Mr J. Belcher. Mr A. Belcher won the trophy donated by I Mr G. Mills, of Stratford. ’Trophies to be donated by the Club have been won by 1). O’Sullivan and L. Rogers. Mr J. Rogers, one of the members, lias now generously donated a trophy, open only to those members who have attended parades. On the 9th April a smoko concert, at which Mr G. A. Marchaiit. patron of the Club, was held in honor of Mr A. Marnier, who is leaving the district, and Mr L. Bolton, who lias volunteered for the front. Apologies were received from Mr d. B. Hino, vice-presi-dent; \V. Lander, Limit. Gray, and (‘apt. McMillan. A match, Newton King v. Cardiff, was fired previous to the concert, and thoi'o’s no doubt the visitors deserved a win. Up to their last man, by consistent shooting, they had a lead of 3. Cardiff won hy 5 points. There is some speculation as to how the position would ,have stood had Mr J. Hignctt arrived earlier. The staff evidently early realised the stubborn nature of the conflict, hut unfortunately for them, their reinforcements in the person of the gentleman referred to arrived too late. A lengthy toast list, interspersed with musical ami other items, was then proceeded with. Mr A. David, on behalf of the Corps, presented Mr Marnier with a framed photograph of the Corps, and Mr Belcher, President of the Club, presented Mr Belton with a fountain pen . Both recipients suitably responded. Mr Crawshaw contributed a line recitation, “The Man from Ironbark,” while musical items were rendered by Messrs F. Prebble, A. J. Smith, J. Morrison, Yatton and Howarth. On Wednesday last a function was held at the residence of Mr J. T. Belcher. Mrs A. Marnier and Miss Mandor were the recipients of presentations by the ladies of Cardiff. Mrs ■Munder received a silver teapot and Miss .Marnier gold chain and pendant. Mrs G reonwell, in a neat speech, said it was a very sad tiling to part with old friends, but she could not understand, in view of the epidemic now visiting Cardiff, why .Miss Marnier was allowed to leave at all.
For some time post the ladies of Cardiff assembled on Friday of each week at the Miniature Rifle Club, and good progress h;is been made in the art of shooting. Mr T. Grubb has donated a trophy for competition among the ladies, and some keen competition will result. The schoolboys shoot twice weekly, so that Cardiif in. time will become a veritable hornet’s nest to the invader.
Lost Friday a very important match was fired, members living north of the school firing a match against those living to the south. Party feeling ran high, and much interest was evinced. South won by a comfortable margin. The following are the s<?ores: —
