FRANCE AND THE HOLY SEE RUSSIAN SUCCESSES DISTURB THE VATICAN. [United Pbzhb Association.] (Received 8.50 a.m.) Rome, April 13.
A feeling exists that the visit of M. Hanotaux, French ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Italy is to open negotiations with the object of arranging an understanding between France and the Holy See, which is considered necessary owing to the Russian successes. The Vatican hopes through France to bring pressure to bear on Russia with regard to the treatment of Polish Roman Catholics. Another question attracting the attention of the Holy See is the rumour that Russia will not rest satisfied with Constantinople, but will claim possession of the Holy Land. WARMING TO THE PEOPLE. BEWARE OF MANOEUVRES OF BELLIGERENT NATIONS, (Received 8.50 a.m.) Rome, April 13, The Giornale D’ltalia warns Italians against the manoeuvres of belligerent nations who are aiming to emphasise the possibilities of separate peace between Austria and Russia, with a view to hastening the intervention of neutrals through fear of being late. The paper says; “The forces of the belligerents are not yet so unequal that either is likely to lose hope of triumph or of ending the war with decorum. An Austrian rebellion against the Berliners Anil he incredible, because in that case Austria will lose the German provinces, which are already considered by Germany as natural appendages to Bavaria.”
