For having received twelve drums of oil and a bundle of copper rods, stolen from the steamer Tahiti!, know, i n , r (diem to have been stolen, Kobert Hempstalk was ordered to come up for sentence when called on. and i nomas Griffiths Jones was sentenced to three months.
Thomas Wood Scott, on remand for sentence for having stolen the aootementioned. was sentenced to fourteen days the .Magistrate taking into consideration that he had been three week's in gaol and had assisted the police by his evidence, INCREASED SHIPPING FREIGHTS Auckland, Apiil 9. The increased shipping freights since the outbreak of the war were reviewed by the council of ’ ho Chamber of Commerce to-day. The President, Air Robert Burns, said there was no doubt there was in New York a whipping ring winch continued outward freights and also had a large say in the homeward rales. This ring was an exceedingly powerful one, and it behoved them to caiefnll.v consider whether or not limy should begin to organise a movement so that when peace was restored tiny would not he left, as they were now, absolutely dependent on these Mng-a It was unanimously resolved: ‘"That ibis chamber invites the eo-opciar.-nn if all other Chambers oi Commerce in New Zealand and of the Farmers’ Cnion to inaugurate a movement, so that after the present war is over steps may be taken to prevent --nippers from being entirely at the mercy of the shipping ring as at present.”
