"A BIG BETTOR."
AND OTHERS LITTLE BETTER. Per Press Association. Auckland, April 7. At the Police Court William Ryan, charged with hotting on licensed prene i.ses, admitted the.-offence. He was described by'the'police as a big bettor, whose character waS good and who always met hik liabilities. He was never before the Court previously for a breach of the Act.—Counsel for defendant said his client had been to the races am| had a drink or two, otherwise the /offence ' would never have occurred.—The Magis'traifeb' l Said he did not think that under those circumstances it was proper to impose : a hue of £IOO, but differentiation must bo made between the JmaU man aiuT-the big man, and defendant would be lined £SO and costs'.
James Lye, contractor, who liad been previously fined £2O for betting, was lined £lO and costs for further offences of this nature.
Alfred Birch, for betting on Ellerslie racecourse, was lined £3O and costs. Geo. Powell, for betting on the wharf, was lined £2O and costs.
