Victorian butter market.

[Unimd Pbbbb Association.] (Received 9:50 a.m.) Melbourne, April, 7.. Victorian butter is beebrhing short, and greater difficulty is experienced in obtaining supplies. The Northern States’ trade is turning to New Zealand if it is possible to purchase in the Dominion. A request lor the temporary remission of threepence per lb. duty is being asked for. HIQH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT, High Commissioner’s cable dated Loudon, April Ist. Mutton.—The market .is firm, demand for prime quality North Island at 6Jd per lb for best quality light weight, heavy weight 6d. For ewes there is less demand at 5 9-16 d. Lamb.—Tile market is very firm, there being a large demand for better grades, but a limited demand for poorer grades. Other than Canterbury 8d per lb, and as high as Bjd for very best quality, second grade 7i|d. Beef.—The market is firm, with improved demand, as a result yf the small arrivals of drilled beef from New Zealand. Hinds 6|d, fores 6djit-hilled hinds 7fd, fores 6|d. Frozen pork is in large demand, owing to the export being prohibited from Holland, at 7jd per lb. Butter. The market is quiet, Danish per dwt. beipg 138 s to 1425, New Zealand 134 s to 1365, Australian 132 s to 1345, Siberian 126 s to 1325, Argentine 130 s to 1345.

Cheese.—The market is quiet, hut steady. Canadian white and colored pen, cwt. 91s to 98s, New Zealand white and coloured 93s to 94s } Australian 88s to 925, United States 88s to 90s, large cheddar shapes up to 945,; English cheddar 98s to 102. Hemp.—The market remains firm, especially for near at hand shipments. On account of the congestion at the docks, spot parcels command a premium. New Zealand good fair grade per ton £35, fair £33, fair-current Manilla £4O 10s.

Pollard.—A shipment of New Zealand good £35 10s, fair £32 10s, faircurrent Manilla £4O. The output from Manilla for the week was 20,000 bales.

Wheat. —The market is quiet, and small business is doing. The forward shipment market is a shade weak. Canadian and American on passage 63s per quarter, April or May 61s, Argentine on passage 60s 6d. Oats.—The market is inactive. Argentine 28s 6cl per quarter on passage. Kauri Gum.—Nothing has been offered. The imports for February were 1 .ton. the stock on 2Rtli February was 346 tons.
