Approaches are being made for a small tunnel of three chains in length near Maticre.
The steady rains of the last few days have put a stop to all motor und bike traffic on the roads here. An Auckland party including two ladies and little girl in a big car, were a few hours late in negotiating the Tangarakau Gorge, and, on account of the muddy and greasy nature of the road, ipent the night in the lonely wilds of the Paparata Saddle amidst a nice downpour of rain. Howeverer, next morning they managed to discover Mr J. Roche’s whare which is connected by telephone, and sent-a message to Ohura for a conveyance to enable them to return to the township. After putting in exactly one week here they were able to proceed, on their journey.
Carters report that us a result, of the recent rains, portions of the Main Ohura road are already in a bad state, It is rumoured that the p.W.IX expects to have the tramway running between the 14-mile and Matiere by the end of May. It seems nonsense c-o expect anything else this time of year.
At Taumarunui on 20th instant, the case against Tyiri Moore, of Ohura, of assaulting a man named Boyle, was concluded after a protracted hearing before Messrs A. S. Laird and Brown J.P.’s. The original charge was reduced to one of common assault, to which Moore pleaded guilty, ad was fined £7 arid costs, including witnesses expenses.
Mr E. T. King, who has been attending to the spiritual wants of the Presbyterians in the Ohura County for about three years, has received notice from Dr. Gibb, convenor of Home Missioned, of his transference to Taumarunui. We understand he will still visit Ohura district once a month during the winter, with probably tome other arrangement in the summer months. Asked had the pioject for building a Presbyterian Church iu Ohura fallen through, Mr King replied in the negative, and explained that owing to an unforseen difficulty the attqr.had only been delayed and would .PP..}vjth fresh vigour next summer. Mr King is well liked; by till denominations here, and we hope to agam see him stationed at Ohura. '
