The condition of Mr A. A. Cuthbertson, who recently received severe injuries through a fall, is showing much improvement.
Dr. Marshall MacDonald has been granted a year’s leave by the Dunedin Hospital Board from the Hon. Medical Staff of the Dunedin Hospital, having volunteered for service with the military hospital in France. The Press Association also states that Mrs MacDonald, who is a member of the Australian trained nurses association, accompanies her husband with the intention of offering for nursing service in France.
Mr John Hook, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Hawera, died on Saturday afternoon, after a short illness, contracted a little over a week previously. It was at first thought (states the Star) that Mr Hook would recover,-hut latterly his condition became worse, and he passed away peacefully on the Saturday. The deceased, who was 63 years of age, was born at Bridewater, Somerset, England, and came out to New Zealand 19.) years ago. He was for thirteen
years licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Hawera, where he gained num. emus friends through his genial dis- - position. The late Mr Hook leaves a widow and grown-up son and daughter. ‘ '■
