The Christchurch City Council has decided to issue no more permits to fruit hawkers after those current have expired (states the Press Association), the by-laws committee having come to the conclusion that fruit sold in the
streets is neither cheaper nor better than that sold in the shops.
A Pi ■ess Association telegram tin’s morning from Christchurch states: A Belgian festival lias been arranged for April 17, and for some tune there lias been keen competition in connection with a Queen of the Carnival competition, but now a dispute has arisen which threatens to affect the success of the affair. The executive decided to give twenty-live per cent, of the proceeds to the Lancaster Park Hoard of control, but various subcommittees have resolved that if this were adhered to, they will cease work, as they are of the opinion that all moneys should go to the Belgians.
The legal offices in Stratford will close for the Easter vacation from 1 o’clock on Thursday, April Ist until the following Wednesday morning.
A Melbourne cablegram states that the Price of Goods Board recommends lixing 9d as the highest selling rate of the 41b loaf.
A Ford motor car belonging to Mr Aguew McCluggage caught fire while at Pohokura yesterday, and was wholly destroyed. The fire occurred while the car had been left unattended on the roadside, and the origin of the outbreak is a complete mystery.
Stratford auctioneers will re-open after the Easter holidays on Tuesday morning, April 6th, not Wednesday, ( as stated in our issue of yesterday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs Webster, Dobson and Co., will hold their fortnightly stock sale, as usual, in their Stratford yards on Tuesday, April 6th.
The Consolidated Company, Wellington, advises the Press Association that it has received advice from London that the appeal against the decision in the case of David Ziman and Coy has been upheld. The Court of Appeal decided that the company was under no obligation under agreement to sell or float a company.
An unfortunate accident occurred at the Stratford railway station about 1 o’clock to-day, when Mr Marra, of Pembroke Road, representative of Messrs W. Dimock and Coy, received severe injuries to the head, being crushed against the loading bank by the door of a wagon which was being shunted. Dr. Paget' was quickly on the spot, and tended the wounded man who was removed to the Stratford Hospital.
A correspondent signing himself “Interested” writes: “I hear that the shops in Hawera are to be kept open till 9 o’clock on Thursday night and then closed till Tuesday. Why doesn’t Stratford follow suit? Anyone wanting to go away for a few days, is stopped on account of the shops opening on Saturday. lam sure the shopkeepers and their employees would welcome a few days respite. Maybe you could mention this through your paper, although its a bit late.” “Interested” is correct regarding Hawera’s action, but so far as we know no special holiday will be'observed Stratford.
