Mr Pearce, interviewed respecting the possibility of relaxing the regulations debarring permanent military officers from enlisting, said: “The German fleet is still in existence. No one knows how many ships may escape when the great conflict occurs. We cannot spare the permanent officers for outside work. No one knows what the future will bring forth.” Questioned'regarding the location of the fleet, Mr Pearce said, “The ships are where they ought to be. Recent reports are that they are in excellent condition, and the crews are especially well.
