Italy

GENERAL MOBILISATION.

NEWSPAPER COMMENT ON THE SITUATION.

United Press Association. (Received 8.35 a.m.) London, March 28,

The Central News’ Rome correspondent states that everything is in readiness for a General mobilisation. It is estimated that 3000 Austrians and Germans left Rome owing to warnings from Prussia. The paper, referring to the dwindling chances, states that Austria believed she could influence Italy towards intervention.

The Message™ has published a presumably inspired article, intimating the feeling in Austrian circles. They would rather give Galicia to Russia than Trent or part of Austria to Italy for the sake of Italian neutrality. This would remove a Prussian nightmare, and leave Austria free to fight Roumania and Italy to the death. The dissolution of Turkey would compel Italy to come to an understanding with Britain in the interests of the Eastern Mediterranean. The defeat of Austria would render it necessary for Italy to act in accord with Russia and Servia in defence of their interests in the Adriatic and in the Balkans.

CHANCE IN THE BALKANS.

SERBIA AND BULGARIA.

ADJUSTING THEIR DIFFERENCES ITALY ACTS AS MEDIATOR.

(Received 9.5 a.m.)

Rome, March 28

It is reported that the Balkan Bloc is likely to be re-constituted. Serbia is negotiating with Italy concerning the Adriatic, while Serbia and Bulgaria have agreed to refer their differences to Italy for adjustment.

AUSTRIAN PRECAUTIONS IN SOUTH TYROL.

United Peebb Association.

London, March 27

Dr. Dillon, in a message from Rome, states that the whole frontier, from Lugano to Lake Garda, has been dynamited for strategical purposes. The whole of the west end of Rovereto has been cleared of inhabitants, the streets and houses having been razed and batteries placed in position. Sympathisers with the Italians are being vigorously treated.

Cholera is raging north-east of 1 dine, where the Italians will advance in the event of war, and many deaths are occurring. Although this is wellknown in Vienna, no preventative measures are taken. The Italians place a sinister construction on this passivity, (Rovereto, one of the prinicpal silk manufacturing cities of the South Tyrol, Austria-Hungary, on the river Leno, population 11,000). \
