THE TRIAL OF DE WET. Times and Sydney Sun Service. London, March 19. At the trial of De Wet, Bloemfontein courthouse wa-s thronged, many of the audience apparently sympathising with the rebels. Evidence was given that De Wet was strongly influenced by racial sentiment which was restrained for years. He was the oatspaw of Hertzog. When Gen. Botha asked Mr Stern to use his influence to prevent the rebellion Mr Steyn sent Hertzog with an appeal to De Wet. The letter's reply was that General Botha must resign and agree to the proclamation of a republic.
